Community Impact

Dr. Elizabeth Thompson Nelson has dedicated her career not only to medicine, but also to uplifting families and communities facing significant challenges.

At Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, West Virginia, Dr. Nelson started a cuddling program for babies with neonatal Abstinence syndrome (NAS), ensuring that the most vulnerable newborns received consistent comfort and care. Recognizing the broader needs of families affected by substance use, she went on to establish the WIN West Virginia Foundation, a nonprofit devoted to family recovery and restoration.

Through WIN West Virginia, Dr. Nelson led efforts that:
   •   Provided essential items and health education to families in need.
   •   Raised funds through community events and initiatives to support recovery.
   •   Employed peer recovery coaches, whose lived experience offered guidance, accountability, and hope to those navigating the recovery process.
   •   Connected individuals to primary care providers, addressing long-neglected health concerns and promoting comprehensive wellness beyond sobriety.

In 2018, Dr. Nelson further demonstrated her commitment to service by competing in the United Way of Southern West Virginia’s Dancing with the Stars fundraiser. Just four weeks after the loss of her mother, Eva Thompson, she honored her memory by performing and raising over $20,000 to benefit local families. Her dedication continued as she joined the United Way board of directors, working alongside community partners to expand outreach and provide hope to underserved populations.

From healthcare innovation to nonprofit leadership and philanthropy, Dr. Nelson’s community initiatives have combined compassion, resilience, and action—improving lives and fostering recovery.
